🎒 Gear List for Out-of-Town Trips & Tramps
Our out-of-town trips take us into some beautiful bush and alpine environments where conditions can change quickly. Don't be put off by this list! You don't need expensive, high-end hiking brands—budget-friendly options or everyday activewear (like polypropylene or wool fleece) work perfectly well to keep you safe and comfortable.
🟢 The Everyday Essentials
What you will actively use, eat, or wear during a standard day on the trail:
Day Pack: A comfortable backpack lined with a simple plastic bag (waterproof liner) to keep your dry gear safe.
Sturdy Footwear: Hiking boots with good ankle support and grip, or other sturdy, enclosed walking shoes.
Layers for the Day:
Base layer: A wool, polyprop, or quick-dry top and pants/shorts.
Mid layer: A long-sleeved wool top or polar fleece.
Socks: Comfortable wool or polypropylene socks (plus a spare pair packed away).
Hydration: A drink bottle or bladder (1 to 2 litres, or more for longer walks).
Food: A packed lunch and snacks—always pack a little bit more than you think you will need!
Sun & Bug Protection: Sun hat or warm beanie (wear one, pack the other), sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent.
Personal Medication: Anything you need daily or in an emergency (e.g., asthma inhalers, antihistamines).
Rubbish Bag: To carry out everything you carry in.
🟠The "Just-in-Case" Safety Gear
Items that live in the bottom of your pack, brought along purely for peace of mind and changing weather:
Weather Protection: A wind and waterproof jacket with a hood (waterproof overtrousers are entirely optional).
Extra Base Layer: A spare dry top kept inside your waterproof liner.
Gloves: A lightweight pair of wool or polypropylene gloves.
Emergency Food: A small, extra high-energy snack hidden away.
Basic First Aid Kit: Including hand sanitiser and basic plasters/bandages.
Head Torch or Torch: With spare batteries, just in case a trip takes slightly longer than intended.
Survival Blanket & Whistle: Lightweight essentials to keep you warm or help you signal for help if you ever get separated from the group.
