Our walks are split into 5 categories. You can find out about each type below

Local Walk - These walks are based around Whanganui and take place in the afternoons & evenings, evening walks take place from October through to March, at least one afternoon walk will run per month while the evening walks are on. These walks range from 30 minutes up to 3 hours long,  These are mostly family-friendly walks, no need to register just meet at the location and time stated

Nearby Walk -  These walks are located outside of Whanganui's urban zone, but not more than a half hour's drive away. These walks range from 30 minutes up to 3 hours long,  These are mostly family-friendly walks, no need to register just meet at the location and time stated unless getting transport

Half-Day Trip- An out-of-town event that is more than a half-hour drive away, which is only expected to take up half the day. on more technical tracks. You will need to register for these types of walks as transport is required

Full-Day Trip -  Any out-of-town event that is expected to take up the better part of the day. You will need to register for these types of events for transport and health & safety reasons

Multi-Day Trip-
We will look at running some of these in the future, These will be events we we will stay overnight in huts or other accommodation. The cost will be higher as the hut fee will add to the cost

Shorter & Longer Options  - Some of our events offer multiple distance options. When we plan this we try to have a shorter loop as the first part of the walk but sometimes this requires walking back self-guided if the main walk is a big loop or a long there-and-back type of walk. If it's an out-of-town trip with these options, please be prepared to have a bit of downtime if you are not completing the full walk or tramp unless you've brought your own transport

Walking Group History

The walking group is relatively new, formed by Willem Doodeman-Beamsley back in 2020 as the RiverCity Tramping Group with support from Ingestre Street Bible Church (now Church on Ingestre), and ran mostly tramps outside of Whanganui. Regular Local Walks began in 2021 with a series of twilight walks on Monday evenings, the local walks eventually became the main focus of the group due to their popularity and became running more frequently and year-round, with the tramping side of the group slowing to only a few tramps a year in 2022 & 2023. The walking group took a pause during 2023 as Willem and his Wife Wai welcomed their daughter Anneke into the world. The walking group bounced back into life in August of that year and has been going strong since with a mixture of family-friendly walks in addition to a few more strenuous walks around Whanganui. Day tramps started to make an appearance regularly back on the schedule from the end of 2023, and late 2023 also saw the launch of this website.
